1. Uddâlaka Âruni said to his son Svetaketu:

Learn from me the true nature of sleep (svapna). When a man sleeps
here, then, my dear son, he becomes united with the True 2, he is gone
to his own (Self). Therefore they say, svapiti, he sleeps, because he
is gone (apîta) to his own (sva) 1.

And the same again:


1. Uddâlaka (uddaalakaH)[ha: verse filler??]  Âruni (aaruNiH) said
(uvaaca) to his son (putram: accusative singular) Svetaketu
(shvetaketum: acc. sing.)

Learn (vijaaniihi [iti]) from me (me) the true nature of sleep
(svapna-antam: sleep-end = as far as sleep, or stuff). When (yatraa) a
man (etat puruSaH) sleeps (svapiti) here (naama??), then (tadaa), my
dear son (somya?), he becomes (bhavati) united (sampannaH) with the
True (sataa: instrumental sing. from 'sat'?), he is gone (api_itaH) to
his own (Self: svam). Therefore (tasmaat) they say (aacakSate),
svapiti, he sleeps, because (hi) he is gone (apîtaH) to his own (svaM)
