Supposedly when Luther broke with the Church, he thought the Jews would flock tof his new religion, figuring that the main reason they refused to join the Church was its heavy-handedness. When it turned out they didn't like him any better, he turned against them with a vengeance.

A bit of an ego problem, one might say.
