I've heard that this whole issue because someone explained to Maharishi (who, after all, cut most of his Physics classes at University to go hang with Guru Dev) that electricity contained both positive and a negative elements. Upon hearing that there was negativity involved, Maharishi told his handlers to go away and just sat there in the dark mumbling , "Negativity...all around us...who knew?"
