Well, he's feeling very besieged right now, which
freaks him out, so he has to cut his "enemies"
down to size in his own mind.  He does that by
imagining that they're "uptight" because whatever
he said was so threatening to them, rather than
acknowledging to himself that they're laughing at
him because he's such a fool, which would be
unendurable.  He makes himself feel more powerful
that way.
