As I recall, it was because John had realized "he [Maharishi] was just a man" 
and (again, as far as I can recall) that John was disillusioned with M. 
specifically as a man (and quite possibly in more ways than one).  I may even 
have tried to get in the father-figure issue toward the end, but the sense I 
remember from Cynthia overall was that, from heart to soul, John Lennon was 
invested in Maharishi (at least that is where Larry finally cut it off).

        Sorry to bore you old timers around here with this topic again.  I got 
to ask Cythnia about this one time when she was promoting "A Twist of Lennon" 
on Larry King:  she kept repeating that "it was his [John's] disillusionment 
that brought him home, it was his disillusionment that brought him home..."  We 
went back & forth but she stuck to her story.
