Most politicians who advocate a switch to a national sales tax (which 
would have to be 20 or 25 percent to make up for lost income tax 
revenue) advocate it only as a way to reduce the tax "burden" on the 
wealthy, but Gravel advocates funding Social Security and Medicare 
out of sales tax revenue, which would be much fairer to low income 
people who are now paying ~7.5% of their income in SS and Medicare 
taxes no matter how much they make:
