Of course you can't deny that Christ (a realized Master) was actually crucified by the Romans at the behest of the then 'scripture bent' Jews. As the Catholic church has degenerated dramatically from Christ's original teachings it still retains in seed form some of Christ's teachings, and as such offers hope to many in need. To wear a memory of the agony and sacrifice of Christ's death is hardly aberrant if you know the context, did he not die and live as an example to us all and did he not actually show how a man can overcome even death by his resurrection?
