The TMO is reporting that Maharishi University of Enlightenment is authorized by Vedic City to grant degrees, but it is the State of Iowa that exercises such authority, and MUE is not registered with the Iowa Secretary of State as required by law.

As explained by the President at the beginning of the ceremony, MUE was established in January 1998, and is the first university in the world fully authorized by the government to offer the mothers of society bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in Maharishi Vedic Science, the Science of Consciousness. The University was licensed in 2001 by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina, USA, to offer degrees in Maharishi Vedic Science. In April 2007, MUE became a government university itself, when it was authorized by the City Council of Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, USA, to grant these degrees as a city university of Maharishi Vedic City." The web site of the Iowa Secretary of State states that <a href="http://www.sos.state.ia.us/business/miscfilings.html";>postsecond ary institutions shall register with the State</a>, but <a href="http://www.sos.state.ia.us/pdfs/MiscFilings/PostsecSch.pdf";>MUE is not listed</a>. MUE was licensed to operate in North Carolina, but since the TMO is now saying that the central campus is in Vedic City, Iowa, it's not clear what presence, if any, there is in North Carolina.
