Dear All

I read with enthusiasm everyone's thoughts about the new album and have a
couple of thoughts

Any band, Faithless or not, whenever following a succesful album or two will
probably struggle with their latest release.

There is a lot here of ... This track isn't as good as that track or this
track is very like that track. Well... what is a band to do? They are stuck
between a rock and a hard place. Either they stick to a tried and tested
formula and then get slated as they cannot produce anything original and are
relying on a successful sound (like a status quo or boy band / steps theme)
or they do try something new and original and get slated as it isn't like
their last stuff.

Good on Faithless for NOT sticking to their last albums and trying out
something new

With regards to the Dido thing that has come up. (My album didn't have a
sticker!) I am sure it was not the band that said put the sticker on the
front but the record / marketing company. Why was it put there? To sell more
records. Faithless or any band are doing what they do to make money and
selling more records and getting out to a wider audience does just that. If
you don't want to follow a band because they have a wide audience then go
find someone else!

Dido was on past Faithless albums so it is not like they are suddenly
cashing in on her popularity by having her guest. She did not do so bad by
Eminem sampling one of her tracks and that (probably) sold her a lot of
records and got her out to a wider audience. Where is the sin in that? Just
because a band is popular / mainstream does not make them bad.

Maybe the latest album isn't exactly what you wanted / expected but don't
slate them for doing something a little different. Remember you can't please
all the people all the time!

And if because the band's album is reviewed in this magazine or that and
makes them mainstream which you don't like fine, I for one will still be
going to see one of the finest live bands on the planet and enjoying all
their music whichever album it is!

Keep smiling

Robin Bateman
