On 04.13.02 05:19 PM, Patrimas, after having an unexpected vision of things to come, declaimed:
>I'm working on an archive with over 3300 files and new ones are added at >the rate of about 20-30 per week. The more populated the folder gets, the longer it'll take to open... I don't know if you're on a Mac or Win machine, but there's a limit (which I can't remember off the top of my head) to how many files a folder can contain. It's more than 3300, but that's gotta be a PITA to wait for it to open! >Currently these are all in one folder. Apart from the organisational >implications for me, are there any disadvantages to this? See above. ::grin:: >The story files are numbered, so if I re-organise I could have ranges of >numbers in each folder which would give even folder sizes but it would be >more difficult to keep track of an author's stories. Or I could have a >folder for each author (>300) but some would contain 1 file and others >70-80 (prolific writers!). I've got two large archives, You Want Fries with That? and Sihn's Empire. http://www.e-fic.com/fries/ http://www.e-fic.com/sihn/ Fries has 118 authors or virtual seasons, some with 3 or 4 stories, some with more than 200! It's organized by author (and then fandom, if they write in more than one), like this: fries candy (folder) crow (folder) crow.shtml index.shtml snh.shtml starsk (folder) ts (folder) ts.shtml HTML (or in this case, SHTML) files are kept at the top level of the author's folder, so I can use canned SSI and/or CSS commands throughout the archive, keeping the "include" files in a folder of their own at the top level. The Empire is organized by mailing list (14 of them - it's a multi-mailing list archive). Within each list's folder, the stories are loose (unless it's a series), and the files start with the name of the author, so they sort together. Like this: empire agl (folder) amy-throughthehaze.shtml angel-breakdown.shtml angel-brokenglass.shtml angel-pickingupthepieces.shtml angel-reflections.shtml ankh-pot (folder) ankh-passagesoftime00.shtml ankh-passagesoftime01.shtml ankh-passagesoftime02.shtml ankh-passagesoftime03.shtml agl.shtml belg (folder) alex-somebodyswatching.shtml index.shtml indigo-thepardon.shtml belg.shtml Again, each list's page is kept at the same level for SSI/CSS purposes. >Recommendations anyone? I don't know if you'd call the above "recommendations", but maybe they gave you some more ideas for organization? ...SuBethJimBob -- Chief Burger Flipper You Want Fries with That?
