the opaque horizontal strip across the chair?  It's all graphics, that page is
done by making the chair (or the tricycle) the background image and then
creating an opaque graphic with a checkerboard pattern, where one pixel is
purple and one pixel is transparent, like this:

T for transparent and P for purple and saving it as a transparent gif and then
making that gif the background for your table or div or paragraph or whatever.
So you have layered backgrounds, either thru nested tables, each having a
background image or thru a div with a background and then a table with a
background inside the div or a paragraph with a background inside the div.

If you right click on that opaque horizontal strip over the chair and save the
background, you can then open it in a graphics program and see what I'm
talking about better.
