Hmm, what doctype are you using on the page?  It may be that the validator is
validating to an older level of html which doesn't recognize background in the
td tag.  However, for Html 4 doctypes, it is perfectly acceptable and valid.

And what validating program or website are you using?  I'll run one of my
pages that uses a background image in a cell and see what it says...

no, but I did calibrate my monitor not long ago, that's it!  it was very dark
before.
