We are using fckeditor - but I have written something that plugs into the "add link" element which allows you to navigate the navigation tree and select a navigation node to link to. It isn't very polished but i had to put it together quickly.
i know this doesn't fix the "insert" functionality you descibe but it does provide an alternative. Let me know if you want the code.
