Not really knowing what I'm talking about, I'm submitting the following guess :)
If I'm wrong, which is more than likely, I too would love the correct answer! I'm guessing that the parentnode attribute is being used in lines 40-42. It's just not labeled as "parentnode". It's checking for a navid key, which is being passed in parentnode, and if exists uses that as the objectid... Maybe?
