OK, this is FC3 stuff (that's all I have right now). This should still help, assuming you can customize genericNav or create an all new one. If nothing else, just drop the attached file into your includes folder and call it directly. Hope this helps:
Here's the call to Generic Nav (the modified one)
<cfmodule
template="/farcry/#application.applicationname#/webskin/includes/_genericNav
.cfm"
navID="#application.navid.home#"
id="nav"
depth="1"
bActive="true"
bIncludeHome="false">
You will need to change the template path to match wherever you put this in
FC4 or if you can modify the main generic nav you'll have to just use that
call.
Attached is the file. It's a very simple modification. Line 63 I create a
qSubNav query similar to how the qNav query is created except it's based on
the current nav ID, not the one that's passed in. Every node has an nLevel
and an nLeft and nRight that you can use to determine children and parents.
There are also a bunch of functions in the application.factory.oTree (in FC3
there were).
Line 185 is the output of the sub nav.
I hope this helps. If you have any specific questions about it, let me
know.

Are you talking about a side navigation like on this site:
http://friedrich.cfwebtools.com
There's one level, but if you click on a node and there are children, it
expands. There's quite a bit of styling involved but the concept is there.
If this is what you want, let me know and I'll share what I have with you.
This is a site that's in development right now (I just did the nav). It's
FC3 but I'm sure the majority of the code could be used in FC4.
