Additionally if you only plan to add an extra field, you can just extend the object.
Personally I prefer to make my own objects (such as you suggested) so that there are no future conflicts (future versions tend to change a lot of things around - like changing up the ftSeq numbers often - which often breaks extended CFCs), but if all you plan to do is add an extra field, extending the object would be much faster.
