what is the code you are using? i'm having a hard time following what you are doing. The genericNav.cfm template outputs an unordered list (UL) and items (LI). The appearance is changed w/ CSS.
You can change the number of levels displayed with the depth attribute. It needs only one start point which is normally the Home node.
