It sounds like your sessions are being screwed up. I remember there being a lot of problems related to jsession and logging in years back, but I haven't heard of any recently. It could also be related to the session-shortening done for bots (I can't remember what version we introduced that in). You can find the user agents that are considered bots at the top of core's application.cfc.
