If you just want to see the system running locally you might try the Express version till you get to grips with things: http://farcry.posterous.com/farcry-express-ready-to-run-install
The Express version is totally self contained and runs on port 8888. As far as I'm aware there should be no trouble running on port 8500 if you must; obviously without friendly URLs.
