As a non-developer, here's my two cents' worth.
I am in favour of being able to see child objects of dmHTML, from the point of
view of management of assets. It is helpful to see what assets are connected to
pages without going into edit mode on each dmHTML object.
Perhaps the view of child objects can be made optional.
In many cases, it is easier to upload a file or image directly to a page rather
than have to trawl through an assets folder and its subfolders to find a
file/image - which you, the contributor, or the site administrator had to upload
in an earlier separate step.
Is it possible to upload images/files via the dmHTML wizard and either
automatically save them under a particular node in the images/files library tab
depending on the group of the user or prompt them via a dialogue box to choose a
destination under the library tab? The menus of files and images in the body
step could be restricted to those uploaded specifically for the object or the
files/images could be chosen via a dialogue box browsing the asset libraries.
After that, every page that is linked to a file or image shows that file or
image as a child object, although every image/file is actually stored under its
library tab. If you right clicked on a dmHTML's "child object" to insert in
another dmHTML, then the link is always to the same file whose real home is
under the library tab - not cross-linking to another dmHTML's child. This way,
all assets are under a central admin library tab as well as visible under the
objects they are used by.
On the subject of management of assets, is there been thought given to how to
systematically clear out old, unused files from both the file and image folders
on the server? We have a large site, growing all the time, and are constantly
uploading new files as old ones pass their use-by date.

Natalie

Tree?

Please respond to "FarCry
Developers"
Tom,
We use to show child objects of dmHTML in the tree... however, that was
removed based on user feedback. Many found it confusing and were cross
linking several pages to point to the same file sitting under an HTML
object. File sharing was designed to work under a separate Assets tab
or File Library Tab.
As a consequence, we removed the visibility of dmFile and dmImages from
under dmHTML in the tree and added drop down menus on the BODY step of
the dmHTML edit handler. For some clients we even modified the Rich
Text Editor to provide this information in the form of a dialogue box.
I think the whole area of "auxillary" objects like file and image and
the UI for associating them with dmHTML needs to be rethought and redone.
Any input from other developers on this list is welcome.
