This has been the main issue for what we have been doing as well. What we
have opted for is to continue with using some "legacy" stuff for the time
being and maintaining two login systems. We don't need any additional
profile information for Admin people (so there it is no issue).

We have such detailed information in our user profiles and dmProfile is
not sufficient enough for our purposes.

In addition, we made an attempt to "play" with installing a psuedo-dmSec
solution to authentication (by using a view onto an old system) but this
was not possible either.

The exposing - from a customisation point of view - of the security
objects would be high on our list for future versions - but we are
surviving for the time being.

The only modifications I make to "core" are those I submit to Daemon for
generic bug fixes or feature improvements.

What I -DO- find useful about "core" is that it gives me insight into how
I can tailor my "custom" area to my needs. I learn how the Daemon guys do
something and then hook into the right spots. Sometimes I can't find a
spot and they are more than accomodating to find a spot and it appears in
the next release.

Modifying core for custom needs will come back to bite you at some point.
Aside from the abovementioned customisation issues with dmSec/dmProfile,
FarCry is THE most open and extensible API I have ever come across in a
Web Application.
