Actually, we were thinking that we would need to rip out the FC User Mgmt System and workflow system to accommodate for the organizational rules that need to be applied to both security and workflow. Here is an actual requirement: The system will enable anyone to submit content and files for public view, while applying any desired level of departmental and regional review and approval, customized for the department or region in question.
Right :)
Well assuming the draft/pending/approved workflow is ok for now... you can apply different groups of approvers to different branches of the tree.
For example, we have a large pharma client who has a group of contributors and approvers for each major department in their intranet. That way they can build whatever they want within the confines of the templates, styles etc. but not impact on any other departments content -- they're a bit territorial :) Such a set up is really easy to implement -- you just create the appropriate role -- and right mouse click on the tree and select permissions.
Now as to replacing the workflow... we are actually spec'ing a specific workflow object to allow for very flexible workflow rules. We're waiting on a sponsor to fasttrack the work -- otherwise it will take us a little time to do it in our free time. If you can't sponsor and/or can't wait then you can rip out the workflow and replace -- but that makes upgrading to future versions of core more problematic :)
