Ok, followed the instructions in that page, created the navigation node,
saved the include file in "testsite/includedObj" and added a link to it
in the dmFooter.cfm, yet when you click in it, all you get is a grey
screen and in the html source code is a doctype, several references to
external stylesheets and some JavaScript and CSS declarations, but no
page and no included content :-(

In the db (educated guesses here), a record exists in "dmnavigation" for
the new navigation node, and in "dmnavigation_aobjectids", there is a
record that links the node's objectid to what I assume is the include's
objectid, for which a corresponding record appears in the "dminclude".

My only deviation from the instructions was to change
   <cfmodule
template="/farcry/#application.applicationname#/webskin/includes/ndeHead
er.cfm">
to
   <cfmodule
template="/farcry/#application.applicationname#/webskin/includes/dmHeade
r.cfm">
as ndeHeader.cfm and ndeFooter.cfm don't exist.

Does anyone have any pointers on what I might have done wrong? Thanks.
