I am doing a similar thing, using the categories to "drop" news content into sections within the navigation hierarchy. I am not 100% convinced that this is the best solution, as a news item could then be in more than one section, but i need to get it up and running quickly. Could confuse the punters.
I will probably revist this at some time in the future, but need to get this up and running..
