Can you tell us a little more about where it will "put" the content items. As i see it there are two approaches, first the content item is shown as a child of the page it was clicked on. Second, the content is associated with a page in the tree - when the content is clicked on from anywhere, then the breadcrumb shown reflects the associated page.
I think the second option is more intuitive, as it always shows the content item in the same path back to home, no matter where it is clicked from..
I did a quick mod to achieve this by creating categories for a magazine site. Each content item is then assigned to a category. When the content item is displayed the the category is checked and the appropriate navid is use to create the breadcrumb. It aint pretty but it works for now, until a better solution comes along.
