Gary, I second that - I have the dmNews rule working hard over here on two User group sites...
My two cents worth would be to turn on debugging and look at the queries to the dmNews table and see what they are selecting and then running them in 'interactive' session with your DB (using query tools like mySql Front etc) and see what you get... I don't know that there is anything you can do wrong. On the ABN AMRO Morgans site, we use a news rule and the content goes away once it has expired. What frequency are you wanting it to disappear in? Is the container part of any caching? If you are using caching, this may be why you are not seeing it disappear immediately - but it should go away eventually.
