Quentin Zervaas spoke the following wise words on 14/03/2004 2:22 PM EST:
Just throwing up ideas without considering implementation in too much
detail... The generally symbolic link thing could be extended to behave more
like unix (in that you can descend down directories).

Which is exactly what I was talking about. I was requested this sort of functionality from another farcry developer which is why I am trying to come up with something and throw some ideas in the air.

From an admin point of view there's only the dmSymLink in the tree, so as
not to confuse the user too much (i.e. don't display the tree it links to
below the dmSymLink otherwise it would appear all the nodes have been
duplicated, just make the user aware that node links somewhere else)

The problem is, as Geoff stated, it's moving further from the Nested Tree Model -- adding all this CF tree manip for retrieving and parsing the data and structure is going to be slower. Whether we can implement this without it being a bottleneck remains to be seen though.

Also there's some legacy code which uses q4 instead of application.factory stuff which would need to be fixed.

And don't forget the security model. For example, a user is allowed to contribute in section1, but not section2. If section2 did a symlink of stuff in section1, then they could add stuff (or appear to add stuff) to section2 of the website.

I think it's definately worth discussing, even only to discover it's not feasible.
