I have been following this conversation for a bit now and can see both
sides of the story.

Geoff - you may remember at MXDU we spoke about "sideways"
categorisation (possibly what you mean by cross-links above) where you
may want to jump into another part of the information model that is
related to where you are but is in a different part of the tree.

The concept I had for this was to be able to have a chain of linked
objects in FarCry (and the necessary display routines for rules and
such) so you could link a HTML object to an event or to a news item (or
any other FarCry object).

I do have to agree though that content should have ONE home in your
information model. And I think FarCry already provides the symbolic
link mechanism to link that content into multiple navigation nodes.

The issue here may be "context".

I think earlier on someone suggested the possibility of a symbolic link
that (when followed in the actual site - vs. in the admin nav tree)
would contextually replicate the sub-nav of the item. I can see this as
being useful (although it does go against the "one home" rule that a
site should adopt for the information model). However, the information
model is NOT the navigation model (it just becomes more confusing to
manage - as has been pointed out).

Gary Menzel
