Hrmmm - now I am in a work (where most of my FarCry stuff is) I can see what you and Geoff are saying.
But..... you could still probably get around that by modifying the standard News display routine.
One way could be to also put "protected" items into a category so the default display page redirected to your protected one.
I still have some issues with the way News (and other custom types) work(s) - because I haven't been able to find an easy way to get these to appear at a specific Nav point (although I believe you can pass a navid on the URL to override the target nav for any object).
I guess what I am saying is that I would go down that path first before playing with the Permissions ID's and such because then you can have a simple mechanism to protect things.
