I would think that the easiest way to achieve this is to use a one main style sheet for the site that covers the overall styling and then inset a stylesheet in each of the sub-trees to handle the colour and image overrides for each channel.
There is a How To "Site Makeover - A Walkthrough" http://farcry.daemon.com.au/index.cfm?objectid=72A0F128-D0B7-4CD6-F98F11EB2944D212 that i think explains how to insert a CSS into the tree.
