Solution: Well, I don't have one. However, if a modification could be made to the servlet to allow you to override both of those attrbiutes (DOMAINS and URLPATTERN) you'd fix two problems in one shot.
Are you running each department as a separate FarCry application? We run some very large intranets using a branch of the tree for each department. Each branch has its own groups of approvers and contributors.
Another alternative is to talk to the network admins about setting up subdomains for each department: ie. deptA.intranet
