Well, Lucene is as good as Verity and it does have the same feature set
AFAIK - but you have to code them rather than relying on pre-built sets.

The majority of clients find that 250k documents is enough to tie them 
over with Verity.  Also Lucene is not as feature complete as Verity. 
However, that said I'd love to see a Lucene implementation for FarCry -- 
its always good to have options.

Best to start this as a "custom admin" project.  You need some sort of 
search maintenance area.  The actually search results page itself is 
simply an included object.

I'd recommend taking a look at the Macromedia DRK work that was done to 
provide a Lucene interface to CF to get started.  Bear in mind that 
anything to be contributed to FarCry opensource needs to be intellectual 
property that can be freely distributed.
