What if I subclassed the AjaxControlToolkit Scriptmanager itself to create
a further implementation? Then, the BaseType would be the
AjaxControlToolkit implementation, not System.Web.UI.ScriptManager.

Yes, you are right. My post was just meant to show a problem with the
current version. I knew this wasn't the best solution, but I didn't have
the time to search for 'the better' solution :)
