I fail to understand, how 'almost like Windows text mode / console'
will change any limits in filesystem or OS.

I'm not either (this would require detailed testing), but the 
inherent filesize limit for FAT16/FAT32 is 2^32-1

it's not (the *implementaion* may be limited by using signed long's)
