Depending on how many codepages you'll use too.The idea behind that is the fact that the uncompressed size of the "FULL" pack is far too big compared to KEYBOARD.SYS (to EGA.CPI in the case of codepages), and maybe not suitable for a FreeDOS bootdisk, when one would only need the essential, or for which the layouts on the "REDUCED" pack could satisfy most of the users.
In the version 1.00, the uncompressed size of FULL is 233Kb, of the REDUCED is 54Kb.
IMO, thats a job for the INSTALLer. On a usual bootdisk, space is often at least as limited as the 640K memory limit. so 54K (unneeded) Kb are as bad as 233Kb.all I need on a boot disk are 1, maybe 2 layouts - thats it.
Anyway, in FD-KEYB 2.0 it will be *possible* (not mandatory) to use KEYBOARD.SYS or such files having more than one layout inside.
even on a desktop many GB hard disk, there is absolutely no reason to have cyrillic keyboard layouts,
turkish fonts/codepages (which are probably larger then kyboard layouts)
LV help messages (unfortunately we don't have many help files yet)
(if you are german like me)
if you are concerned about *distribution* size:
you can 'doublezip' your files, by 1'st pass - store everything into archive using 'UNCOMPRESSED'
2'nd pass - zip this file
then the 'full' distro is smaller then the current 'reduced' distro.
I don't understand this, you mean a kind of TAR-ZIP?
I agree. What is, in your opinion, the most suitable thing to be done?distribute FULL only - and have a decent language aware installer. and that's certainly not your job - there are so many other developers on this list, waiting for some sensible work :-((
Just one thing:
if you realise how current install works, it has a batch/CHOICE menu which let's you choose your "XKEYB xx" line.
I came with the idea to replace it with a "CALL xx.BAT", where, for example, SP.BAT could be
XKEYB SP
MODECON CODEPAGE SELECT 858
SET LANG=ES
It's not what you mean, but it's still a first step.
