The comment made that you could setup with windows and then run Linux
does function using the full drive trust capabilities on the Seagate
drive.  We actually show this as part of our evaluation systems to
demonstrate that you can completely destroy the windows install and then
reboot and the drive still asks for the pre-boot password. 

 

For an unmanaged environment The ATA commands will also work but most
OEMs have built in recovery back doors and this may create issues.

 

Ultimately the real advantage of a manage environment is the ability to
prove that a lost machine was encrypted. This is not important if it
just your personal machine but critical if it is a corporate machine as
it is how the company achieves protection from the liability of data
loss.
