Actually, refusing to testify against yourself in US courts can be contempt of court. There are at least two conditions I am aware of:
1 - When you have already started testifying, you cannot stop. You have waived your right to self incrimination. 2 - If you have been granted immunity from prosecution (for example, by Congress), you do not have the right to remain silent. 3 - You have no right to silence in a civil trial.
