I went to this seminar last year... As Caribou pointed out, the
President of the Law Soc basically tells you that the most direct
route to a training contract is through personal contacts. I expect
that this will be emphasized even more this year due to the current
climate. Some aspects of it were interesting though. Newly qualified
solicitors give their account of the lengths they went to to get an
apprenticeship. Most of the advice given on how to get a contract you
have heard before i.e. being persistant, sending cvs, networking,
preparing for interview etc. At the end of the seminar everyone is
split into smaller groups for the CV workshop. You have to bring a
copy of your current CV and a solicitor goes through it with you. I
found this quite beneficial as she gave us some solid CV tips on what
exactly she would be looking for when considering calling a candidate
for interview. As regards the price, I think it was somewhere in the
region of 60 euro last year.
