For me, both the process of making Fedora-commons installable by a
debian package, and also the resulting package are desirable outcomes.

For one, to make a decent package, various things need time and care:
1) Adopting the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard - FHS
  - configuration files go into /etc, /etc/init.d/ contains a mechanism
to start and stop Fedora, etc
2) The use-case of Fedora being installed on a pre-existing Tomcat gets
attention
3) Profiling certain collections of services to make for different
flavours of Fedora: Basic personal store = [XACML off, REST API on, RI
off, JMS off], Basic repository = [ etc.

And secondly, by decreasing the adoption barrier to "apt-get install
fedoracommons", I think that you will increase the amount of weekend
hackers - those who might give it a try and play with it. With the REST
API turned on, there is very little new code that a hacker would need to
get started.

Then, once they have been broken into the idea of an objectstore, then
we can introduce them to the idea of disseminators and Bdefs/Bmechs ;)

And then, there are all the benefits of having a package - you can push
updates using apt-get, in the same way that many admins will be familiar
to, the creation of a fedora-commons Vmware hosted server can be
scripted. Adopting the FHS means that existing sysadmins will more
readily take over the maintence of a repository if they do not have to
do anything unusual. Intuitively, the logs should be in /var/log,
/etc/fedoracommons is the config directory, /usr/share/doc, etc and if
they don't find them in these places, then they get annoyed and tend to
not bother.

And if the Fedora package can be made to meet the Debian Guidelines...
Then, we can really start to tap into a wider market.
