Thorny, Congratulations on your new position! I'm really committed to getting Fedora here, as it is the only game in town. I feel that I've pretty much won the hearts and minds of those who count here, but I also imagine that the Smithsonian adoption of Fedora will even further cement the wisdom.
I hope this move of yours might give us more opportunities to interact, although I"m sure you will be extraordinarily busy. I have accepted a position in the CIO's office at the Smithsonian Institution as the Director of Research and Scientific Data Management. I really don't see this as leaving the Fedora community, more as moving to another seat at the table. We will be using Fedora at the Smithsonian to begin to get a grip on all of the born digital information that is gushing out of their research activities. For those of you who think of the Smithsonian as a bunch of museums (19 and counting), you should know that there are many other research institutes, libraries, archives and a zoo that are all included, all of which are hemorrhaging digital information at an alarming rate. I am very interested in using the fruits of all of our labor to try to do something about that. I am proud to say that I am leaving the Fedora project and the DuraSpace organization at a point where they are both very strong, with tight, well-developed communities behind them. It has been a very interesting 10 years, that is for sure! The opportunity that the opening at the Smithsonian offered represents a chance to start over one more time before I retire. I am really interested in getting back to where I think that I am most useful, translating between researchers and techies. You certainly haven't seen the last of me. I intend to show up at many of the usual places, including Open Repositories in Austin, Texas<x-apple-data-detectors://2> next spring.
