Possibly the original rationale might have been that any service on an
object would be expected to be related to the object's data (and therefore
bind to a datastream).  However since an object's data can be exposed using
the resource index (and "binding" it to the object using the $pid default
parameter mechanism), then datastream binding should not actually be
required.
