Thanks, that helped. The last post at the bottom of the page worked for me:

setfacl -m group:gdm:x /home/*

Allows only the gdm account to traverse into home directories so it
can pick up .faces. I presume the same method would be effective in
allowing public viewable html directories without giving everyone
traverse access.
