No one mentioned 'ed' the original line editor.
If "learn" was still available I would recommend it simply
because learning 'ed' teaches so much about patch and
also about regular expressions.
After you begin to write programs larger than a screen or
two begin to look at a revision system. RCS is a good
start (yum install rcs). And when you graduate from one
file to many look at "make".
