Which all falls apart when trying to deal with several thousand messages
all in one folder, on a system that just doesn't cope with that much
content...

I remember Opera going down the path of turning your mail into a local
database.  It works for the average non-tech user who has only the
slightest bit of mail, but totally crapped out when I tried to use it
with about five different mailing lists.

Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored.  I
read messages from the public lists.
