Yeh, there was a change to yahoo's authentication protocol. I'm not sure
of details, I found various posts about this, there are some pre-built
binaries for pidgin 2.5.7 that fix it, see links here:

Some servers are still using the old authentication protocol, I changed to
use cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com for now, and that worked.
