Tried this a half dozen times, no problem.  So I tried the regular
method a dozen times, no problem.  There should have been a couple
of lock ups with that many starts.  

There was an update to gnome-common today, so I logged in and out.
Maybe that update fixed the problem.  I'll keep monitoring.
