So don't do a graphical remote login.  A simple ssh login will give you a bash
terminal and you can type whatever you need into that.

You can boot into runlevel 3 by putting a 3 at the end of the appropriate line
in grub.conf or by changing the 3 to a 5 in /etc/inittab.
