OK, it worked now... it was either the angle at which I was holding
the keyboard or the timing of my key presses.

Apologies for wasting your time...
I should note that a NetBSD LiveCD is much nicer and drops to a menu
instead of  the rushed "booting in 10 seconds"
countdown....
