As our focus with my son's sessions is mainly Python, and as I'm the primary
user of the system (hence, always have sound), this is not in any way a
critical issue. I'm just curious.

I have this issue with my daughter. It is a matter of shutting down any
apps she is running, when I switch user, that may have the audio device
open. These usually include: firefox, skype, etc.
Once I close those out on her account, I can switch user to my account
and all is well.
