The "timeout=0" starts the boot process without delay.  Set it to a
higher number.

I run with hiddenmenu commented out and timeout=8 and have no problems.
Uncommented and "hit any key" displayed and works fine as well.

Do you have a USB keyboard?

I think that might be the correct question to ask. ;) I have had similar problems, the fix was to `enable USB devices while booting' in the BIOS. But since you could do this earlier, not sure its a similar problem but worth a try.
